History

If a Phish song falls in the forest and nobody hears it, does it make a sound? On one hand this may seem like an odd question with regard to the Page original, “Windy City,” which made its debut on 8/11/09 at Toyota Park in front of nearly 30,000 fans just outside of the Windy City and did, of course, make a sound.

"Windy City" – 8/11/09, Bridgeview, IL

But in another sense, it’s an entirely appropriate question. Some Phish songs arrive on the scene and are nearly universally adored (e.g., “Ghost,” “Black-Eyed Katy” or “Seven Below”). Though a considerably more rare occurrence, other songs seem to elicit instant and widespread disapproval (“Jennifer Dances” is probably the most obvious example of this phenomenon). “Windy City,” on the other hand seemed to elicit almost no reaction from fans or from the band, who have yet to play the song again. Until they do, “Windy City” aficionados will have to make do with the Party Time studio version and, for the real hard cases out there, the 7/30/09 "Ghost" (where Mike teases the song).
