Review by tsatsawassa

tsatsawassa OK, so I was there. I was a senior in high school and I won tickets from WRPI without knowing who this band was at all. I was underage, but they let me and my buddy in. I sat at a table right in front of the band drinking Coke. I actually have proof I was there, because I asked for the poster the band put in the window, which I still have to this day. I actually just emailed Kevin Shapiro today with a picture of the poster to see if any other copies exist. There's a date hand drawn on the poster and a Pauly's Hotel logo affixed to it, too.

I had no idea what any of there songs were when I went to the show, but I can tell you one song they played. Trey told this whole long convoluted story about the song Divided Sky before launching into Divided Sky. Someone in the bar was so sick of his long story that they told him to shut the f*ck up. I seriously doubt that anyone knew who the band was at the time, and I am assuming most people were there just to get drunk. Phish had the trampolines and there were these pitchers of beer on the floor in front of them. I remember watching as the pitchers almost toppled over from their bouncing on the trampolines.

Funny story from the show was that I had long hair and played drums with my band; so I exuded the whole 'I'm a musician' vibe, although I was just a coddled white punk on dope from the 'burbs (Guilderland). I was milling around between sets with the band and someone came up to me to ask how long our band had been together; in other words, this person thought I was in Phish. Trey and Fishman looked at me with a little bit of hilarity when I told the person that those guys are in the band, not me.

I was so blown away by the show that I asked the bartender for the poster in the window because I knew they would become big. I thought they would end up at the (then known as) Knick arena in five years. I was wrong, it took them six years. I also distinctly remember that Mike was outside after the show by himself and it was raining. Someone had ripped down one of their other posters and it was outside on the sidewalk getting wet from the rain.

I bought a copy of their Junta cassette that night with the pink Fishman on the cover. I still have that, too.

Review by peruvian

peruvian I was a SUNY Albany student from '87-'90. Please don't ask me to remember the set list or even one song from a show over 23 years ago, but I can attest that it happened. My now wife, a great friend, and I were there. We sat at the bar and drank Killian's Irish Red until the dancing began and we watched the boys bounce on the tramps. The shuttleboard table wasn't even moved as there was only about 30 of us there. I had long been running around the northeast to see the band at Nectar's, The Front (I loved when The Front was full of hippies and the Outback full of Frat boys), etc. so when they came to Albany, we walked down the block and enjoyed the show.

Review by unoclay

unoclay I was not at this show, but met a fellow on tour who was telling me about it. It was his first show, he told me to look it up, and that all he can recall is that they played Foam. He was pretty certain about this, so perhaps we can confirm "Foam" as part of the unknown list.

Review by Trems88

Trems88 Ok if they really played at Paulys in 1989 and someone reads this that was there or knows someone that was etc, add a comment and tell me about it. I went to Suny Albany from 2005-2009 and spent a ridiculous amount of time at that bar drinking 25 cent drafts. It seriously is a sacred place to me and about 100 of my friends. For my first 2 years at school anyone who was under aged went to Pauly's with a chalked id and got crazy for weekends on end. UA is a big school and the vast majority of underaged drinking for my class was done at this bar. Every time I mention to someone that Phish played at Pauly's once its hilarious. I feel like half of my "college stories" involve John Mancini's Pauly's Hotel, and like most, that really is a lot of stories.

Someone enlighten me on this unconfirmed show/setlist. I can only imagine the corner that they would have squeezed into, at the same time knowing that I definitely pissed in it a few times.
