Thanks for the nice write up here. Big Boat continues to confuse me, not at all because of the the music, but because it exposes Phish's trite approach to studio albums. It's so strange to me that a band would dare to do something as bold as the Baker's Dozen, but then fall back into typical album fare when going into the studio. It's like Phish (or maybe Trey?) are holding onto this pipe dream of crafting an enduring album or even single, which clearly they aren't cut out to do. Their albums never really play to their strengths, which maybe isn't the point for them as a band going into the studio, but I can't help but feel like most Phish albums are frankly inessential. I will never understand their decision to include neutered and boring versions of recently established live debuts (Blaze On, NMINML), but to axe a studio version of a composition like Mercury, one of their more interesting songs in 3.0. I also think Petrichor is a wonderful composition and does stand up next to the great old compositions, but you're right, will never get its fair due because it's such a youngster. Oh well.
