MYSTERY JAM MONDAY PART 344

Welcome to the 344th edition of Phish.Net's Mystery Jam Monday, the final and most difficult of September, and a special edition: 8-time MJM winner and Hall of Famer @justino has chosen this week's jams and handed them off to fellow emeritus @wforwumbo (whose audio wizardry has been on full display for months) for beautification. The result? Some dope jams that make a fair MJM, but one not for the faint of heart. The winner will receive an MP3 download code courtesy of our friends at LivePhish.com / Nugs.net. To win, be the first person to identify the songs and dates of the three mystery clips, which are connected by a theme that needn't be part of the correct answer. Each person gets one guess to start – if no one answers correctly in the first 24 hours, a hint will be posted. After the hint, everyone gets one more guess before Wednesday at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET. Good luck!

Hint:

Answer: Congrats to @HarborSeal on crossing the halfway mark to retirement with his fourth win – this time, with the "Tweezer" already in hand, he quickly realized that the baseball cards of three closers in the '90s hinted that these jams came from three tour closers in the '90s: 12/17/95 "Tweezer," 11/29/98 "Simple," and 12/13/97 "Vultures." Stay alert for MJM345, when we'll begin a month of single jam MJMs from across Phish's history.

MiguelSanchez I was listening to the mystery jam and trying to think of a tie in that involved .003 OBP points or 1 stolen base then i saw that @uctweezer didn't pull these tracks.

That simple is a dark masterpiece. Thanks to @sprachtor for bringing that one to my attention years ago.

chipre I was hoping for a 2008 Brad Lidge card in the hint!

krivraq I was at #s 2 and 3. Always seems nerdy cool to actually have seen a MJM song. Now if I could just tap into my "limitless" gene then I could have a shot on some of these.

HarborSeal Those are great clips, by the way. And they sound SO good! Great choices @justino, and great work with the sound @wforwumbo.

FWIW, I had the Tweezer Monday. Once I saw the hint, the others fell quickly.

uctweezer Definitely had fun with @wforwumbo figuring out which closers to use. I thought using Wetteland, Flash Gordon, and Mariano - the closers for the NY and MA teams at the times the clips were played - would be a nice subtle way to hint at the solution. Alas, John Wetteland was traded from the Rangers before the trade deadline in ‘95, so there are no Wetteland Yankees baseball cards readily available till ‘96. So we went with wumbo’s suggestion of the closers from the teams that won the Fall Classic in ‘95 (Braves), ‘97 (Marlins - I love Robb Nen for his time as a Giant but I’m still mad they beat us in the NLDS that year because of the stupid “2 away, then 3 at home” setup the DS had in those days), and ‘98 (Yankees).

That was the year he was like 38 for 38 right? I had him as my fantasy closer the next season, and saw that he had lost some of his magic and benched him one weekend at the end of April. He ended up falling apart spectacularly, and the rest of my league thought I was some kind of wizard for having the foresight to bench a guy who hadn’t blown a save in two seasons.

I won that year. And that was the last time I won FBB until I beat @MiguelSanchez in the championship this week! (6-5 with a late inning Yelich steal to tie on SB on Sunday, and the aforementioned win on OBP by 0.003). Boom!

chipre Yes sir - Lidge was, I believe, 41 for 41.

Kinda wish the Cubs had him this year...

mcgrupp81 I found the Vultures song choice funny because "Vulture" is the term used for a reliever that blows the save and winds up getting the "W" anyway. And 12/13 is the "Bring in the Dude" show. I don't know if a manager ever used that term to summon a closer, but that would be pretty sweet. Did I forget to mention, forget to mention, that Eric Gagne 2003 was one helluva closer?

I’ve also heard the term “Vulture Save,” for when a closer needs rest (eg they’ve gone three straight games) and another random reliever gets the save instead. But that’s more of a fantasy baseball term, where you care who gets the save instead of “they won.”

Eric Gagne was a roided up fat sweaty goggle wearing bulldog with one of the nastiest sliders I’ve ever seen.

User_25597_ I love how nerdy this thread gets. Like in a heartbeat. And what I mean by that is that I wish I were half as smart as what it apparently takes to nail one of these things. Oh well. Next Monday it is.
