MYSTERY JAM MONDAY PART 293

Welcome to the 293rd edition of Phish.Net's Mystery Jam Monday, the last and most difficult of September. This week's clips come from the twisted and sadistic mind of Jam Charts guru @Dog_Faced_Boy – those familiar with his work helping out with the MJM over the past year know won't be surprised to hear he thinks I go too easy on you guys each week! The winner will receive an MP3 download code courtesy of our friends at LivePhish.com / Nugs.Net. To win, be the first person to identify the song and date of all four mystery clips – these clips are connected by a theme, but it needn't be part of the correct answer. Each person gets one guess to start – if no one guesses correctly, I will post a hint on Tuesday around 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET, after which each person gets one more guess before I reveal the correct answer on Wednesday. Good luck!

Hint: It makes sense that this week's puzzle would come after last week's puzzle. Check that: we have a winner!

Answer: Congrats to @mickeyjoe86, who wins his fifth MJM, and now has won a single, double, triple, quadruple, and quintuple-clip puzzle! Not sure if it'll happen, but that would be pretty cool if he won a six pack and a seven-clipper to close the deal on his imminent Emeritus status. This week he didn't even need the hint to figure out that I followed up last week's A Live One theme with a theme based on Phish's follow-up release, Billy Breathes. He correctly identified the 7/15/98 "Free," the 6/7/95 "Theme from the Bottom," the 9/1/13 "Prince Caspian," and the recent 8/1/17 "Steep." Special thanks to @Dog_Faced_Boy for putting together this week's puzzle, and the first Monday of October will bring the MJM difficulty back to earth for next week's puzzle: MJM294.

serpent_deflector I have no clue, but I can't wait to see the answers because I know I've heard #4 and it's something I'd like to listen to again. :)

Phished880 thank you for clip #1. It forced me to go listen to that set.

mcgrupp81 You guys remember Jam #2 right? It's that one you heard that time you had a bad acid trip and imagined you were traveling on the River Styx to the Underworld.

Hmmm...it didn't sound like 11/3/94 SOAM.

HarborSeal I feel like these MJMs are getting tougher. I might end up stuck trying to secure victory #3 for a long time....

Hehe maybe you haven't been around for a minute, but they do get tougher throughout each month by design and as announced, then start back to easy. This is the last MJM of the month, thus it's quite hard (but very solvable if someone thinks it through). Next week's is the first of the month and will probably be solved in 25 minutes.

Nice job @MIckeyjoe86 - how did you possibly guess all of those? Not just guessing the songs, but the version? Seems almost mathematically impossible....

There seems to be a huge misconception that the folks who win MJMs just recognize the tunes / guess them. It is extremely rare for someone to solve a multiclip MJM just by "knowing" the jams outright. Instead, folks have an idea of the era, the year, or the tour, and get clues about what song it could be based on the jamming or the key it's in, and then go hunting. I'm willing to bet that @mickeyjoe86 recognized at most 1-2 of these clips, thought maybe it could be. Billy Breathes theme, then went hunting for the other two on phish.in or PhishTracks. Before phish.in / PhishTracks the MJM was almost always a single clip, and it took a while for someone to answer if it wasn't recognized right away. When those sites came online, it became trivial to scan a song version in 30 seconds to see if it matched, and the MJMs started falling in an hour almost every week. That's why we moved to the multiclip + a theme format: it takes a little more time to figure out, but it's more of a puzzle and exposes folks to more music without being much harder (this weeks nothwithstanding).

Duh... :/
And I'm listening to it now, as I go through the BD once again.

@uctweezer is pretty much right on the money here. I recognized clip one from the LP CDs that I had in days of yore and clip four from recent heavy rotation of the BD shows. From there, I picked up on the theme. I heard a 3.0 Caspian in clip three and jump on Phishtracks and got lucky with it. Narrowed the other songs with 'jamming potential,' picked up on an era and went from there.

Basically, theme first then era and song recognition.
