MYSTERY JAM MONDAY PART 274

Welcome to the 274th edition of Phish.Net's Mystery Jam Monday, right in the middle of May and right in the middle in terms of level of difficulty. The winner will receive an MP3 download code courtesy of our friends at LivePhish.com / Nugs.Net. To win, be the first person to identify the songs and dates of both mystery clips – these clips are connected by a theme, but the theme needn't be part of the correct answer. Each person gets one guess – if no one guesses correctly, I will post a hint on Tuesday, after which each person gets one more guess before I reveal the correct answer on Wednesday around 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET. Good luck!

Hint:

Answer: On the heels of his deep run into the MMJM Tournament Championship that still left him winless, @ChalkDustTeacher steps out of the shadows of Dan Marino, Barry Bonds, Marcel Dionne, and Karl Malone to take down his first MJM victory – something tells me this won't be his last. After the revealing hint, featuring the cover of Phish's "Two Soundchecks" release with a Jack-o-lantern Photoshopped over some dude's dome, along with some close-but-not-quite guesses from others, he correctly identified the 10/31/94 Soundcheck ("Star Wars") Jam and the 10/29/09 Soundcheck Jam (turn this one up – the levels are horked because it was recorded using a toaster, but the jam is fantastic). Stay tuned next week for a more difficult take on the MJM that will put us halfway between MJM250 and MJM300.

Yes it is. Believe it or not, it was worse to begin with, but I did a little tweaking to be able to use it today.

TwiceBitten well that makes it even harder to match up to the original! nice work.

fhqwhgads I'm guessing 8/1/03 (It Sound Check Jam - particularly the part after Skin It Back) and 12/29/99 (Big Cypress Sound Check Jam - right near the end of the long, 20-min. one) with the theme being Festival Soundchecks.

If this is right, it makes sense given the questions posed to Trey during the latest Rolling Stone interview.

I really am just guessing, though I went and listened to the 12/29/99 Check and @ucpete's clue that the recording had to be doctored fits with it. That is a nearly unlistenable recording as it exists on phish.in'.

serpent_deflector This is just a guess because I didn't listen to the Glen Falls sound check all the way through to confirm the first clip and completely guessing on the 2nd but here goes. First try at this.

10/31/94 Soundcheck Glen Falls
10/31/86 Soundcheck Goddard

Theme Halloween soundchecks?

12_29_97_4eva Er...posted this earlier but didn't seem to make it to the site. Haven't listened and won't have time, but I'll go with 10/29/09 Soundcheck and 12/29/99.

mickeyjoe86 Is it the 8/1/2003 and 10/29/2009 soundchecks?

Yup that is certainly it.
Found 10/31/94 soundcheck on youtube just now. Isn't on any of the sites.

I traded for 10/31/94 back in the day and bought it on disc when it came out-- and it didn't come with the soundcheck.

What gives??

When the LivePhish series were released on iTunes most of them included a bonus track which was usually a soundcheck. It is pretty annoying that they aren't easy to find anywhere else.

Oh you crazy kids and your iTunes!
Well I have a whole bunch of soundchecks to listen to today now!

mcgrupp81 Interesting choices this week. I heard the first jam and knew it was a soundcheck and the sound quality reeked of LivePhish. The contrast of the awful second recording was nice. It actually made me think of an old copy of the Clifford Ball soundcheck I had in terms of sound quality though I knew it wasn't the jam. I honestly suspected it could have been a really bad copy of a Fall 98 jam. 6 months to MJM #300. Will he make it?

If you're asking if I'll make it to MJM300, probably! If I don't it won't be for a lack of ideas or jams... I already have the next 14 MJMs clipped and ready to go.
