MYSTERY JAM MONDAY PART 270

Welcome to the 270th edition of Phish.Net's Mystery Jam Monday, the penultimate MJM of April. The winner will receive an MP3 download code courtesy of our friends at LivePhish.com / Nugs.Net. To win, be the first person to identify the songs and dates of all three mystery clips – these clips are connected by a theme, but the theme needn't be part of the correct answer. Each person gets one guess – if no one guesses correctly, I will post a hint on Tuesday, after which each person gets one more guess before I reveal the correct answer on Wednesday around 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET. Good luck!

Note: The Championship for the Mockingbird Mystery Jam Madness Tournament will start next Tuesday, April 25th, to give the finalists a breather before the last puzzle and accommodate some tough upcoming schedules. Stay tuned...

Hint: Difficult clips, easy theme. It'll be a miracle if this one holds up.

Answer:
Pete: "Difficult clips, easy theme. It'll be a miracle if this one holds up."
MJMers: "Hmmm, I'm thinking easy -> Easy Rider -> Jack Nicholson -> Jumpin' Jack Flash -> 6/27/10 @ MPP -> MPP shows?"
Pete: "No tricks, nothing to read into. It's just a really easy / obvious theme – one of the first that folks check."
MJMers: "Miracle -> Lake Placer -> Hockey -> Shows where Trey wore a Flyers jersey?"
Pete: "There are no tricks here! The theme is extremely obvious."
MJMers: "Oh, duh! Tricks -> Trick or Treat -> Halloween -> Vegas -> Dancers -> Carmelo Anthony -> Madison Square Garden -> Madison -> Wisconsin -> Green Bay Packers -> Football -> Running Back -> Runnin' with the Devil -> 8/6/98 -> Lakewood -> Same theme as last week?"
Pete: "..."
@andrewrose: "You'd think it would be something from 4/17. But it's not."
@runlikecarini: "4/17/94 Wolfman's Brother, 4/17/04 Pebbles and Marbles, 4/17/99 (Days Between ->) Jam"
Pete: "Welcome to the Emeritus Club, My Friend My Friend!"
MJMers: "MYFE?"

Yep, all clips came from shows played the same day MJM270 dropped – on April 17th – five years apart from one another in '94, '99, and '04, with the '99 show being a Phil and Friends show featuring Page and Trey. If you've never heard that three night run, please check it out now, as it is essential listening for fans of Phish and the Grateful Dead. In fact, the video recently surfaced from all three nights: 4/15/99, 4/16/99, 4/17/99 (time-stamped to this week's clip for your delight). Congrats @runlikecarini – well deserved win and we've got a dozen MJM Emeriti (and I believe you're the youngest!). Next week: Monday – MJM271; Tuesday – MMJM Championship Round!

Not that I'll ever win one of these, but I'll bet that the end of that first one is a red herring. I know I spent a good amount of time sorting through lead in's to the assumed tune.

justino I swear I have heard that third jam a hundred times.

officercookies Okay Tuesday and no real guesses,

Sounds like a theme, then a tweezer, and then what I would expect to be another T song (Tube?)

But per usual I know nothing
, comment by andrewrose
andrewrose you'd think it would be something from 4/17 92, 93 and 04. But it's not.
, comment by 12_29_97_4eva
12_29_97_4eva Not quite the hint I was hoping for, Pete. Was thinking you might say, "The song in Clip 1 rhymes with 'Geezer' and is from the year when the Yankees won their first World Series of the 1990s. Clip 2 also rhymes with 'Geezer' and is from the year after the Yankees won their first World Series of the 1990s. Clip 3 sounds like it's going to go into Camel Walk, but nope, it's also a Tweezer from 1997. Namely Europe 1997."

That would have been more helpful. Just an idea for next time!

I forgot to mention: definitely don't take the hint at face value, or think about what the easiest themes are. Instead, be sure to read way too much into the hint, looking for shows with song lyrics that discuss levels of difficulty, shows sharing the same date as "I Need a Miracle" performances where Trey was onstage, and definitely read up on Jonathan Goldsmith!

justino Well, I have to make a guess before a meeting. I am sure someone will have solved this before the end of my meeting (3:30).

To be clear: I was being facetious. The hint is as straightforward as the theme. No tricks, nothing to read into. It's just a really easy / obvious theme – one of the first that folks check.

TwiceBitten It's amazing how similar different Phish jams can sound. I've fastidiously checked two Tweezers from the mid 90s that are almost certainly not clip 2, but sure sound like they could be.

Well the solo in the middle and the 'miracle' hint (Lake Placid anyone?) I think was too much to ignore.

Once again, I think we're overthinking it.

Well Done!
Had the first, don't know how I missed the Pebbles (thought I checked that?), didn't think to check Phil & Phriends.

Enjoy Emeritus status!

I scanned through 4/17/92 and 4/17/93 knowing the sound wasn't right because of Pete's hint. Even downloaded the soundcheck for the 4/17/93 show. About 10 minutes ago I remember that Phil and Phriends run and found it within a minute of that. I knew the third clip sounded familiar too so I was getting angry that I couldn't figure it out. Glad I found it for more reasons than one! I'll be waiting for you on the other side with spliff, some sip of sunshine and the star lake gumbo. I can't imagine you'll be too far behind!

In my particular case, i was a HUGE tape trader in the late 90's (about 250 shows in a three year period through college).
Other than that, listen to a LOT of shows and generally learn the jams of the various eras.
, comment by jimsleftear
jimsleftear I feel vindicated that at least I knew it was a Wolfmans, knew it was an -04ish song, and knew it wasn't ONLY Phish I was hearing in that one clip. I'm improving though still losing
