MYSTERY JAM MONDAY PART 263

Welcome to the 263rd edition of Phish.Net's Mystery Jam Monday, the final and most difficult of February. The winner will receive an MP3 download code courtesy of our friends at LivePhish.com / Nugs.Net. To win, be the first person to identify the songs and dates of the three mystery clips – these clips are only vaguely connected by a theme, so I don't expect it to help much and won't require it to be part of the correct answer. Each person gets one guess – if no one guesses correctly, I will post a hint on Tuesday, after which each person gets one more guess before I reveal the correct answer on Wednesday around 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET. Good luck!

Hint: While all three clips come from shows in three different decades, with each show featuring a Mike's Groove, the reason I put them together is because they're all atypical endings of their respective songs.

Update: Our apologies for the site maintenance issues – thanks to our awesome tech team, we're back in business! In case anyone missed my comment below, the MJM will end tomorrow (Thursday) morning before 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET. Did I mention that the clips come from songs before*, after*, and in the Mike's Grooves from the shows at which they were played?
*not necessarily the song immediately before or after...

Answer: It took an MJM with the most tenuous (ableit revealed-at-hint) theme to date, and folks were closing in on the answer in the waning (extended) moments, but it finally happened: The Blog has won its 18th MJM! The Blog hadn't won in more than six months, and I myself hadn't won as host in more than ten months (the last two wins were during the no holds barred Emeritus Challenge). Despite a few hints down the stretch, folks were unable to identify the 4/14/89 The Sloth, the 10/22/16 First Tube, and the 7/31/97 Mike's Song, all of which had generally unusual and atypical-for-the-song endings. For MJM264 I expect a feeding frenzy, as the difficulty will drop precipitously and we'll be playing for two codes.

TNzak Yea I cannot read anything either.

TwiceBitten wow. no one huh? I can assure you with almost 100% certainty that clips 2 and 3 are not any the endings of 20 different songs that I almost thought they were. This one is hard!
, comment by 12_29_97_4eva
12_29_97_4eva Damn you, ucpete. This week's MJM is a doozy. I spent 30 minutes listening to the last five minutes of the Coventry Ghost, convinced that clip two came from it. Disappointed and anguished, I concede the challenge.

timkell This is even tougher with no jam charts!

uctweezer I can't edit the post because the site is still messed up, but I'm extending the MJM till tomorrow at 10 AM / 1 PM – or if it's still not up, the morning after the site does come back up. Stay tuned, and sorry for the technical difficulties!

Phart_Door Anyone know what happened to the site? Did Trump's SOTU blow shit up?
, comment by The_Steiner
The_Steiner @Phart_Door i heard it's Amazon's fault

::sourcey::

also, helluva job with the MJM. my closest guess for the theme is: all played by Phish
looking forward to seeing what the answer is!!

uctweezer Actual explanation for site woes: routine maintenance gone awry. Most everything is back working though (except I still can't quite yet edit the blog), so no excuses: MJM deadline is tomorrow (Thursday, March 2nd) at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET.

I tried both of these out and I'm pretty sure neither of them is clip 2 or 3, though there are remarkable similarities... would be miffed if I was wrong

dbertsch Damn. I give up. Got #1 and #3 but couldn't find #2.

@courvoisier was so close on the second clip... When I saw those posts I got worried it'd be a wire job, where I'd be writing up my victory speech but refresh once more before posting, only to see the correct answer sitting at the bottom of the comments. Insane that even with this MJM, which was just plain stupid difficult, the guessing crew got two of three and got the song and year correct on the remaining clip, but guessing the last First Tube played before 10/22/16! Insane. Bravo to you all – you may not have taken me out this week, but I'm as impressed as ever. Next week will be a gift (and a sprint) compared to this week's marathon.

courvoisier Nice MJM win @uctweezer. For a few months starting in early '89 that was the ending to The Sloth eventually giving way to the current ending. I knew that second one was a First Tube in the last year but it was getting late so threw the Dick's one in there, guess I should have searched a little bit longer. I know I listened to that shoreline show in the last month had all of 97 on my phone for a while.
, comment by HarborSeal
HarborSeal Pete, nobody got the 7/31/97 Mike's! Kind words, but we (collective we) only got one of the three and came close on one other. The Shoreline Mike's--despite being bold on the jam chart--eluded us.

I, harborseal, on the other hand, got nuthin'.

PhreePhish Didn't have too much of a chance to check this week due to work schedule. Gave a stab at it late Wednesday. Tried to match #2 to the 9/30/00 Emotional Rescue for like 25 min. Thought it was there.
Well done Blog!!
, comment by mcgrupp81
mcgrupp81 Ucpete with the tough love. #3 wasn't an issue but #1 and #2 by themselves wouldn't have been fun in the sun. Can't imagine there was any intention, but that First Tube show was 20 years after that MSG show with the tight Mike's Groove with the killer Weekapaug. Speaking of anniversaries, the next MJM falls on 3/6, which is the 25th anniversary of the start of the 92 Spring tour. A fine time for Mike's Groove's (3/20, 4/16, 4/19, 4/21) and of course Antelope. Good job Ucpete.

HarborSeal Oh, I missed that. Nevermind then!
