MYSTERY JAM MONDAY PART 140

Greetings, and welcome to the 140th episode of Phish.net's Mystery Jam Monday! Including today's edition, we're still eleven Mystery Jam Mondays away from the opening show of Phish's 2013 Summer Tour, which should provide you ample opportunity to fill up that road playlist.

That's because, per usual, we will be playing for an MP3 download, courtesy of our friends at LivePhish.com / Nugs.Net. The rules haven't changed: you need to correctly identify the song and the date to win. Post your guess in the comments. One guess per person per day (with the second “day” starting after I post the hint). A hint will be posted on Tuesday if necessary, and the answer will be posted on Wednesday.

Best of luck!

Tuesday Hint: The streak of fourteen straight MJMs that have not needed a Tuesday hint has been snapped! It remains to be seen, however, if the Blog can put an end to its winless streak of twenty-five. Here's your clue: along the lines of what @ucpete alluded to, there are MJMs which are topical, and MJMs which are not. This week's MJM falls into the former group.

Wednesday Answer: With the win, I'd like to congratulate -- the Blog! It was a true nail-biter, as many of you were able to pin down either the era or the location, but ultimately no one was able to put it all together and name the 12/31/94 Chalk Dust Torture, played at the old Boston Garden, and chosen in the wake of the utter chaos that enveloped Boston last week. Check out the end of that track for the post-outro evil spaciness that ultimately fades into a soothing Horse > Silent.

Stay tuned for next week's one hundred and forty-first Mystery Jam Monday, when the Blog attempts to put together its first two-win streak and improve its current record of 8-114-14[1].

[1] That would be 8 wins, 114 losses, and 14 hint-aided losses. And yes -- when falling to 106 games below .500, you're damned right we're counting hint-aided losses separately from the garden-variety ass-whuppings we typically suffer.

I can't tell for sure either from the phishtracks AUD ... but what I do hear for sure on that recording is that someone is not having a good time. Sheesh.
, comment by andrewrose
andrewrose Don't think it's the Waves either. Could be anything really. For some reason I'm feeling 98 but no idea where to look... doesn't seem to be any of the spacey outro jams from the Halloween run..

dyn0mite Definitely feel a Fall 98 through 99 vibe to this one. Could also be 03/04, or a random 95 outro(unlikely), but it doesn't seem to have the dissonance those jams did.

But what do I know....great pick by the blog!

uctweezer It sounds 2.0 to me, which means I'm probably wrong. As far as the topical guesses go (never any guarantee about the MJM being topical though!), I was thinking something 4/20 related or something Ventura related -- but it's not the Makisupa from 7/20/98 for example (would have been perfect right?). And I checked both Ventura shows (7/30/97 and 7/20/98 -- no dice). My trigger happy 8/12/04 S&SS guess came from the fade out being in the same key... but I checked all the S&SS from 2.0 and it doesn't fit. I also thought it'd be a dirty trick to have Phish's "final" fadeout (Coventry Curtain With) but it's not that either. Someone will figure this out by tonight I'm sure, but this is a really good one because it's nondescript but not impossible... to be clear, I don't think anyone has gotten it thus far, unless I'm deaf and it _is_ Waves from IT all along (but I've listened to that WAY too many times so I might need to get my head checked if it is).

Yeah, I'm almost positive it's '95, '97, '98, '03, or '04 ;) which means it's something from '96 that I've ignored for the last 15+ years. @bl002e is doing an awesome job so far!

User_23503_ I lot of people seem to think it's 99-00 or 2.0 stuff, but honestly I think it could be 94-95. This is just downright scary, kind of like 12/29/94 Bowie. Not that later stuff doesn't ever get scary, but this just has that kind of feel to it. I think its a Tweezer or Bowie but I have no clue so I'll let someone else guess

Yeah I'm sure... I'm wrong! I got trigger happy again and thought for sure that a Kung (marathon references) from Boston on the band's 20th anniversary (in the year of their 30th anniversary) was about as topical as you could get and thought OH SHIT SOMEONE ELSE IS FIGURING THIS OUT NOW before I ran into a meeting. Meeting was cancelled and I should have waited to check :) I just looked at 4/20/94 as well, no dice. I can't even guess again but it's still driving me crazy!

Yeah, specifically 19-21 seconds in, I've definitely heard that before. Reminds me a bit of 12-1-94 Tweezer. There's another part that sounds just like the end to Frankie Says from 12-28-10 and the Waves 8-2-03 isn't too far off. I spent some time looking up some dark jams but this is not an easy one.

That is what I thought too - and like the crowd isn't sure whether the song is ending or what exactly is going on. I plowed through a lot of 2.0 usual suspects but came up empty. It is out there somewhere - good luck!

1) 4/20 / weed (what else could it be besides Makisupa?)
2) Boston / Marathon / Boat?? themes
3) Earth day themes

andrewrose Really stumped. Thought maybe the hint was leaning at Stash given a) it's topical (4/20) and b) the phrasing included some being topical, some not (ie maybe so / maybe not), but maybe I'm reading too much into it there. Either way, I've come up empty. Gut still tells me it's 98-00.

I can't believe a NYE jam got by everyone. i haven't listened to NYE '94 in forever. I guess I owe it a listen. I honestly have zero recollection of that chalk dust. well, this is one of many shows that the MJ is gotten me to either listen to for the first time ever or first time in a really long time.

enjoy the victory. someone's getting it in 5 minutes next week!!
