Note that this not the same as Trey's solo song "Shine", nor (more obviously) the Rolling Stones' tune "Shine a Light".

During the 12/31/94 “Mike’s Song,” Mike teased the overplayed tripe-rock “Shine” (by overplayed tripe-rockers Collective Soul) that includes the lyrics, “Give me a sign, show me where to look, tell me what will I find.” Tom Marshall (who sang on “Run Like an Antelope” in the first set of that show, but was back in the audience by then) must have cringed at the tease and appreciated when Mike moved on.

Little did anyone know that the tease was a sign of something to come. At Madison Square Garden a year later, Tom appeared to sing the song as a lesson in the importance of moving forward. Trey set up the appearance with narration (in “Col. Forbin’s Ascent”) about getting stuck in time. Following the comically horrific display, the band introduced the Phish Time Factory - a dazzling array of lights, smoke, and tesla coils shining down, and said to ensure that the world keeps spinning so that we don’t get stuck with crappy pop tunes for very long. Whew!
